Lyca Mobile Free SIM: How to Get One (and Pay Half Price for 3 Months)

By the Lyca Referral (UK) team · Updated 12 Jul 2026 · Independent guide — not affiliated with Lyca Mobile.

Here is the short version: every Lyca Mobile SIM is free. You never pay for the SIM card itself, and Lyca does not charge for delivery either. What you are actually buying is the plan attached to it — and that is the number worth optimising, because ordering through Lyca’s refer-a-friend link gets a new customer 50% off a SIM-only plan for the first three months.

Quick answer: The SIM is free with any plan ordered from lycamobile.co.uk — posted out at no charge, or delivered instantly as an eSIM. Lyca’s old 30-day free trial has ended; the closest current equivalent is 50% off your plan for 3 months via a referral link (checked 12 July 2026).

This guide covers how to order a free physical SIM and how long it takes to arrive, the instant eSIM route, what happened to the free trial, the cheapest pay-as-you-go plans to pair the SIM with, and how to activate it and keep your existing number.

What a "free SIM" from Lyca actually means

“Free SIM” is one of those phrases mobile networks love because it sounds like a giveaway. In practice it means the SIM card costs £0 and postage costs £0 — which is true of Lyca, and also true of almost every UK network. Nobody should ever pay for a SIM card in 2026.

So the real question is not whether the SIM is free; it is what the SIM commits you to. With Lyca the answer is: whatever plan you pick at checkout, and nothing more. The entry point is a £5, 30-day pay-as-you-go bundle, and there is no long contract unless you deliberately choose a 12- or 24-month SIM-only plan.

  • SIM card: £0, physical or eSIM
  • Delivery: £0, sent by Royal Mail
  • Plan: from £5 for 30 days — this is the actual cost
  • Credit check: none on pay-as-you-go

The SIM connects to EE’s network through Lyca’s BT Wholesale deal — see what network Lyca is on for the coverage detail — and 5G is included at no extra cost on every plan.

How to order a free physical SIM (and when it arrives)

Ordering takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Choose your plan. Browse Lyca’s pay-as-you-go bundles or SIM-only plans — or start from the referral link on this site so the 50%-off-for-3-months discount tracks automatically.
  2. Pick “physical SIM” when asked for a SIM type. (If your phone supports eSIM you can skip the post entirely — next section.)
  3. Check out. You pay for the plan; the SIM and delivery are free. No voucher code is needed for the referral discount — it applies through the link journey itself.
  4. Wait for the post, then activate and (optionally) transfer your old number.

On timing: Lyca’s delivery help page says orders are dispatched within 24–48 hours on working days and most SIMs arrive by Royal Mail within 2–5 working days; if nothing has turned up after 7 working days, contact support on 322 (free from a Lyca number) or 020 7132 0322. Wording on Lyca’s help pages changes from time to time, so treat the official page as the last word.

💡 Tip: The referral discount is applied by the link itself — you never type a code at checkout. Lyca’s terms also warn that stacking extra voucher codes can void the referrer’s reward, so keep the basket clean and let the link do the work. More on this in our Lyca promo code guide.

In a hurry? The eSIM is instant

If your phone supports eSIM, there is no reason to wait for Royal Mail. Lyca emails the eSIM QR code with your order confirmation, and its pay-monthly plans advertise instant eSIM activation. The quick compatibility test: dial *#06# — if an EID number appears in the readout, your phone is eSIM-capable.

Two conditions worth knowing before you choose it: the phone must be unlocked, and Lyca’s terms say the eSIM must be activated in the United Kingdom. eSIM is available on both pay-as-you-go and pay-monthly plans, for iPhone and Android, and existing customers can swap a physical SIM to an eSIM later through the “Swap SIM” option in My Account. The full setup walkthrough is in our Lyca eSIM guide.

What happened to Lyca’s 30-day free trial?

It ended. Lyca ran a 30-day free trial SIM for a while, and plenty of deals pages and old blog posts still describe it as if it were live — but Lyca’s own blog now carries an expiry disclaimer on the offer. If you arrived here searching for a “Lyca free trial”, the honest answer is that there is currently no way to test the network for £0 (checked 12 July 2026).

The closest things to a trial right now:

  • The £5 UK Plan Smart bundle — 5GB for 30 days with no ongoing commitment. A fiver to test EE-based coverage where you live is not far off a trial.
  • The referral deal — 50% off a SIM-only plan for 3 months, which roughly halves that entry price again.
  • Lyca’s own intro promos — e.g. National Plus at £5 for the first 30 days (then £10).

One honesty note: on several 24-month contracts Lyca’s public intro offer runs 6 months at half price, which beats the referral discount’s 3 months. For pay-as-you-go and 1-month plans the referral link is the better deal; for a long contract, compare both at checkout before committing.

Entry-level PAYG plans for a free SIM (checked 12 July 2026)

These are the pay-as-you-go bundles shown on Lyca’s free SIM page, checked 12 July 2026. Lyca rotates prices often, so treat this as a dated snapshot rather than gospel.

PlanDataPrice / 30 daysWorth knowing
UK Plan Smart5GB£51,000 UK mins & texts, 100 intl mins, EU roaming
National Plus30GB£5 first 30 days, then £10Unlimited UK mins & texts, 100 intl mins
All In One 1010GB£9.90200 intl mins, EU & China roaming
UK Plan Super Extra75GB£15Includes China & India data roaming
UK Plan Mega Plus120GB£20Includes China & India data roaming

Two pricing notes. First, Lyca’s public pay-as-you-go intro discounts usually cover the first month only, while the referral link halves the price for three months — on UK Plan Super Extra that is £7.50 instead of £15 for each of the first three renewals, a £22.50 saving versus £7.50 from the public intro. Second, whichever route you take, the price on the final checkout screen is the one that counts; Lyca’s promo pages sometimes lag behind the main store.

No credit check on pay-as-you-go

Pay-as-you-go plans involve no credit check — you pay up front for a 30-day bundle, so there is nothing to credit-assess and no search appears on your file. That makes the free SIM route genuinely useful if you have just moved to the UK, you are a student with a thin credit history, or you simply want a phone plan that never touches your credit record.

The pay-monthly side is different: Lyca’s own help pages confirm that a credit check is part of signing up for its pay-monthly SIM-only deals — and on Lyca’s site that category includes the 1-month rolling plans, not just the 12- and 24-month contracts. So if avoiding a check is the priority, stick to the PAYG bundles above.

Activating the SIM and keeping your number

Physical SIMs come with activation instructions in the pack; eSIMs activate from the QR code in your confirmation email. Either way, restart the phone once the plan shows as active.

To bring your existing number over, text PAC to 65075 from your old SIM. It is free, it works on every UK network, and your current provider must reply within a minute. The PAC stays valid for 30 days — give it to Lyca via its Number Transfer Form or by phone (322, or 020 7132 0322), and Lyca says transfers typically complete within 1–2 working days. The full process, including what happens to your old SIM mid-switch, is in our keep your number guide.

⚠️ Warning: Get your PAC and complete the transfer before cancelling your old contract. Cancel first and the number is lost permanently — no provider can recover it for you.

If data doesn’t work straight away

New SIM in, signal bars showing, but no internet? The usual culprit is the APN — the setting that tells your phone which gateway to use for mobile data. Most handsets configure it automatically when a Lyca SIM goes in; some do not. Before assuming the SIM is faulty, toggle aeroplane mode, restart the phone, and check the fields against our Lyca APN settings guide.

That is the whole picture: the SIM is free everywhere, the plan is the actual product, and for a new customer the referral link is the cheapest way to run one — half price for three months on pay-as-you-go and 1-month plans.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Lyca Mobile SIM card really free?

Yes. The SIM card — physical or eSIM — costs nothing, and delivery is free too. The catch is simply that a SIM on its own does nothing: you order it together with a plan, and the plan is what you pay for. That is standard across UK networks; mainstream providers have largely stopped charging for SIM cards. The useful comparison is plan pricing, where Lyca’s £5 entry bundle and the 50%-off-for-3-months referral discount are the levers worth pulling.

Does Lyca Mobile still offer a 30-day free trial?

No. Lyca’s 30-day free trial SIM has ended — the company’s own blog now carries an expiry disclaimer, although many third-party articles still promote the trial as live. As of 12 July 2026 there is no zero-cost way to test the network. The cheapest realistic substitutes are the £5 UK Plan Smart bundle (5GB, 30 days, no ongoing commitment) or a referral order, which halves any SIM-only plan for the first three months.

How long does the free SIM take to arrive?

Lyca’s delivery help page says orders are dispatched within 24–48 hours on working days and most SIMs arrive by Royal Mail within 2–5 working days. If yours has not appeared after 7 working days, contact Lyca support on 322 from a Lyca number or 020 7132 0322 from any other phone. If you cannot wait for the post at all, order an eSIM instead — the QR code arrives by email with your order confirmation.

Do I need to pass a credit check to get a Lyca SIM?

Not for pay-as-you-go. PAYG bundles are paid up front, so there is no credit assessment and no search on your credit file — useful for new UK arrivals, students, or anyone protecting their credit record. Pay monthly is different: Lyca’s own help pages confirm a credit check is part of joining its pay-monthly SIM-only plans, a category that on Lyca’s site includes the 1-month rolling plans as well as the 12- and 24-month contracts. If avoiding a check is the priority, stick to a PAYG bundle.

Can I get a free Lyca SIM without buying a plan?

Realistically, no. Lyca’s current free SIM journey is plan-led: the order page asks you to pick a 30-day bundle before it will send a SIM (checked 12 July 2026). The minimum spend is the £5 UK Plan Smart bundle with 5GB. If you just want a spare SIM in a drawer, that fiver is the effective cost of entry — there is no long-term commitment attached to a 30-day bundle.

Is 5G included on a free Lyca SIM?

Yes — 5G is included at no extra cost on every Lyca plan, including the £5 entry bundle. Lyca runs on EE’s network through a BT Wholesale agreement and claims coverage of 99% of the UK population, with 5G in over 150 towns and cities (Lyca’s own figures). Wi-Fi Calling has also been live on all Lyca UK plans since May 2026, which helps indoors where the signal is weak.
